How To Add Macros In Excel 2016

Hi, I'm an experienced Excel user on a Windows PC, but I am having difficulty getting a macro to run in Excel 2011 for a Mac. I record the macro but when I run it, it doesn't perform the steps. When I look at the Visual Basic code, it looks like Excel didn't write the code for performing the macro. When I create the exact same macro on a Windows PC, it works perfectly--I record the macro by performing the actions I want Excel to do for me, and it writes the code for me. I've gone into the Security setting; explored everything in the Developer tab; tried clicking and unclicking Relative References, etc. And can't figure out how to make it work. Any ideas out there?
